Sheamus ready to rumble in Daytona |
One look at the non-tanned Sheamus, you would assume he has never been near a beach — especially The World’s Most Famous Beach.
That will change Saturday, as the World Wrestling Entertainment red-headed champion will headline a card at the Ocean Center.
Sheamus, who will be joined by more familiar names like John Cena, Randy Orton and Chris Jericho, is a huge part of WWE’s shift to focus on its young superstars.
The News-Journal talked by phone with current WWE champion Sheamus, who is from Dublin, Ireland.
Are you going to visit the beach?
We stay as far away from each other as possible. I like Daytona for the bikes, the Harleys.
Your WWE debut was June 30, 2009, and here you are already a two-time WWE champion. What does that mean to you, the first Irish-born champion?
It means everything to me. I gave up a lot and sacrificed a lot to come to the U.S. to follow my dream. I was pretty serious as to what I wanted to do. You have to make your own opportunities. I was a little bit surprised at my quick success, but I knew if I got the opportunity I would take it. It’s a great honor. It’s opened up a lot of peoples’ eyes to the product and it has created a big following back home. It’s a dream come true.
We know you are 6-foot-6 and 272 pounds. But how big are you in Ireland?
It’s incredible — there is so much going on when we go overseas. WWE is huge — we go there twice per year.

Backstage, Sheamus stops Wade and tells the fella to wait a second. Sheamus says that he has a proposal. Wade asks Sheamus if he would like to step into his office, but Sheamus decides to stay in the hall.
Sheamus is walking in the back as we go to commercial.
We are back and The Champ is Here as Sheamus comes to the ring. Sheamus tells the record to show that he has beaten Cena in a Tables Match, a Fatal Four Way, and now a Steel Cage. When he beat Cena the first time, they called it a fluke. The second time, they called it luck. Now that he has done it a third time, it should be called dominance. What is next for John Cena. John gets to the back of the line and he won’t get another title match against him again. Cena should have done what he did earlier tonight. He found Wade Barrett and he told him that he demands a truce. One year ago, nobody heard of Sheamus or the Nexus, but like it or not, they are the two most powerful entities in the entire WWE. They don’t have to like each other. They will stay out of each other’s business. Sheamus says that the truce is in effect starting tonight. That is good news for him, but not for Randy Orton. The only way he can lose the title is through Nexus interference. Randy Orton doesn’t stand a chance. Sheamus says that Orton can watch him become the longest reigning WWE Champion of all time.

SummerSlam Preview |
WWE Champion Sheamus vs. Randy Orton
Legend has it that around 400 A.D., Saint Patrick used his charms and powers of persuasion to drive all the snakes out of Ireland and into the sea. Unfortunately for WWE Champion Sheamus, The Viper, Randy Orton, has never been one to surrender quite so willingly.
Truth be told, the Irishman will have his hands full when he battles Orton in a WWE Championship Match at SummerSlam. While Sheamus attempts to retain his second WWE Championship, The Apex Predator has his flickering eyes hoping for his sixth.
For each Superstar, the path to a WWE Title Match has proven demanding. Sheamus was forced to best John Cena at Money in the Bank in a controversial Steel Cage Match that witnessed the meddling influence of The Nexus. Meanwhile, Orton earned his opportunity by defeating Edge and Chris Jericho in a punishing Triple Threat Match on Raw. The common thread between these two competitors being that each appears to straddle the tenuous line between aggression and transgression.
In the end, though, The Viper offers his opponent a thorny set of challenges as slithery and unpredictable as any in WWE history. And while Sheamus may appear as fair and alabaster as his beloved cliffs of Dover, he’s also just as rugged and unforgiving – and leaves Orton with a task equally as steep.
